Build pipes, not walls

President Trump should focus on Flint pipelines, not building a wall

Although Donald Trump has only been president for nearly a month, he has made some controversial executive orders. Whether people agree with his decisions or not, nothing has slowed Trump in keeping his promise to “Make America Great Again.”
During Trump’s inauguration speech, he addressed issues that are ravishing the country such as bringing jobs back to America, building back the wealth of the middle class and keeping illegal immigrants away from the borders. However, Trump’s claim about giving back to the United States fell upon deaf ears as he has proven to the residents of Flint, Michigan.
On Aug. 14, 2014, residents of Flint were informed that their water had been contaminated with a form of bacteria that could possibly poison its residents. It would be the years following that citizens would be victims of lead poisoning to the degree of serious health conditions such as seizures, decreased brain development and, in some cases, death. Photos and videos have flooded media over the years of the contaminated water and the citizens affected by it. Organizations from all over the country have helped fund the restoration of pipelines in Flint, while others help give back to the community through providing fresh water, school supplies etc. Although individuals have been prosecuted and convicted of the incident, the pipelines have still not been fully restored causing health complications to this day.
The reasons citizens are infuriated with President Trump is due to his priorities. Trump has recently announced that he has every intention to build a wall along the Mexico-United States border. While many reports have circled about the wall, one thing that has been confirmed is that the supposed wall is to cost roughly around $25 billion. The means of paying for this wall have been speculated from having Mexico pay for the construction, to paying the workers around $85 an hour.
However, if Trump’s real effort is to support and fix the problems plaguing the nation, he should be focusing on the lives of his fellow Americans. The crisis in Flint has affected residents for years, and according to it would only take around “$55 million to fix with only 30 crews…the pipe replacement would cost around three to four thousand dollars a home.” Now, if Trump’s priorities were truly in line with benefiting the lives of American’s, then he would spend the minuscule amount of money it would take to give them clean water, rather than build an unnecessary wall.
The intention here is not to bash or diminish President Trump, rather make a statement to say that his claims of benefiting the lives of fellow citizens has so far been ignored. Trump said during his inauguration “So to all Americans, in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, and from ocean to ocean, hear these words: You will never be ignored again.” Well Mr. President, it’s time for YOU to prove how much you care about American’s and instead of trying to keep them out, help those in need.
