Vital resources students should become familiar with on their academic journey

If you are new to Schoolcraft College, familiarity with the various facilities and resources offered by the college is a must for you. If you’re a returning student, allow this article to serve as your reminder.

At Schoolcraft College, students are offered many services to enhance their learning experience and assist them in various ways. Whether you need counseling assistance regarding your educational and career path, employment opportunities, tutoring or a place to purchase your school supplies on a student’s budget, Schoolcraft has you covered.
All students are encouraged to capitalize on the benefits from these various services as it will definitely make your college experience more manageable.

Regular hours:
Monday–Thursday: 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
Friday: 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Every second Saturday each month: 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

Academic advising services are there to assist students with their academic decisions as well as transfer planning and decisions. Advisers will help students determine which courses to take at what time, whether credits will transfer, and how to fulfill graduation requirements efficiently. Advisers can also guide students in deciding on a major if they’re having trouble determining which degree to pursue. Schedule an appointment with our academic advisers by calling 734-462-4429.

Counselors understand that managing the stress of work, school and a personal life can be challenging, which is why they’re there to assist students with developing effective time-management skills. Counselors are also able to provide assistance or referrals in handling personal matters that may be affecting a student’s academic success. Other services available in the Schoolcraft counseling department include mental health screenings, workshops, seminars, and networking resources for its diverse clientele. The bookstore is one place students will frequent. Whether it’s for school supplies, Ocelot apparel, tech or snack items, the bookstore is your one-stop spot. You’ll find a variety of art supplies, course textbooks, notebooks, uniforms, gift items, computer software and accessories.

If you ever need to use the computer, print out assignments and projects or conduct research, head over to the Bradner Library. The library is a quiet place for completing homework and studying. Other resources include access to books, eBooks, reference materials and journal articles from a wide selection of academic databases.

The LAC has tutors of various courses who take out time from their day to assist students who are struggling with their assignments or who want to put in extra time to prepare for exams. If there’s an area of study giving you trouble, be sure to check the LAC. The LAC is located in the back of Bradner Library. Services offered include: Drop-in Tutoring, Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), Writing Fellows, online workshops, Student Athlete Support and the University Bound Program to name a few.

The Student Activities lounge is the place to escape from the stress of academics. Whether it’s hanging out with peers or passing time between classes, feel free to head to the Student Activities lounge. The lounge offers free popcorn on weekdays, T.V., movies, video games, table games and the company of other students. The Student Activities Office is also where you can join one of the thirty-five clubs and organizations offered. The Student Activities Office and Student Center is located in the lower Waterman wing of the VisTaTech Center, downstairs from Henry’s Cafeteria.

For students with a passion for staying fit and working out, Schoolcraft’s Fitness Center is equipped with over 110 pieces of state of the art equip.m.ent, locker rooms, complimentary towel service and professional staff to help you meet your fitness goals. The Fitness Center is open seven days a week and membership is completely free to registered students. Personal training sessions are also available and can be purchased at the front desk.

American Harvest Hours:

If you’re on campus and need to grab lunch between classes then try out Henry’s food court in the VisTaTech Center, where breakfast, lunch and dinner are always served with your budget in mind. Henry’s menu includes a Southwest station, homemade soups, deli meats, bosco sticks, pizza and an always fresh salad bar. Desserts are prepared daily by Schoolcraft’s culinary students. A large selection of snacks, candy and drinks are also readily available.
Down the hall at Main Street Cafe, second year culinary students prepare homemade soups, bread, pastries, salads, pastas, family-size entrees, cookies and more. Menu items range in price from $1 to $12. American Harvest, open after Sept. 1, also offers gourmet dishes prepared by culinary students and Certified Master Chefs. Reservations are highly recommended.

Career Services is the place to go for students interested in earning a paycheck on campus or who need help finding outside employment and pursuing their professional career paths. Students can schedule an appointment with a career counselor for opportunities of student employment. The Career Services Office is located in the McDowell Center, Room 105.
For students interested in continuing their favorite sport at the collegiate level, Schoolcraft offers eight sports and 12 teams, all of which have open tryouts. Sports offered include men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, golf and softball.
Schoolcraft competes in the Eastern Conference of the Michigan Community College Athletic Conference (MCCAA) and in Region XII of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Show your spirit and become an Ocelot athlete. Those interested in trying out for a team should contact the Athletics Office at 734-462-4804.
