Transition from book to big screen a success
After six years of waiting, fans across the world can rest easy knowing that “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” has finally hit theaters.
“The Mortal Instruments”, a book series created by Cassandra Clare, follows the life of Clary Fray, a seemingly normal girl who is best friends with a boy named Simon. One evening, while out at a nightclub, Clary witnesses a group of teenagers murdering a stranger she had seen earlier that night. Unbeknownst to her, no one else can see these people, which makes her seem a bit crazy. This is when she first gets a glimpse of the Shadow World. Soon after this brief interaction, she is pulled into that world. What does she find within it? No spoilers here.
Going into the theater, the true fans were easily spotted, especially at heightened moments during the film. The film, which is taken directly from a book of the same name, stays neatly on the tracks of what the author wrote. “City of Bones”, which is only the first book in a series of six, takes the audience through many twists and turns and leaves the viewer yearning for the next installment. The movie’s interpretation does the book justice, and while some aspects were changed and some even added, it only enhanced the experience of discovering the magical world of the Shadowhunters. Any fan of the book series might fear the possibility that the book may have been butchered during the production process, but in this case it follows the book well. The film’s director, Harald Zwart, made sure to work closely with Clare to make sure her vision was brought to life for the screen. Actors Jamie Campbell Bower, Lily Collins, and Robert Sheehan bring the three main characters to life in this adaptation of the beloved book series, and fans will not be disappointed with the outcome. “City of Bones” is in theaters now. This is an end-of-summer blockbuster you won’t want to miss.
