Students now can earn a certificate or associate degree to prepare for careers in the fitness industry

As Schoolcraft continues to implements new programs into its curriculum, it steadily catches up to major universities and provides students with equal opportunities that they may receive at a four-year college. In an attempt to broaden their spectrum and provide students with these countless opportunities, the college has launched a Physical Education Fitness Leadership program this fall, in which students can earn a Fitness Leadership Certificate or Associate Degree to Prepare for Career in Fitness Field.
Contained within this new curriculum are eight new physical education classes have been created. These eight classes include: Introduction to Kinesiology (PE 111), Introduction to Exercise Physiology (PE 112), Exercise Tests and Measurements (PE 143), Exercise Techniques (PE 147), Facilities Management (PE 207), Applied Exercise Physiology (PE 212), Motor Development (PE 225) and Fitness Leadership Internship (PE 290). These classes each set students up for a career in physical education, or perhaps may provide students with fun, physical classes.
As of this fall, Schoolcraft offers the opportunity for students to receive certification from the Physical Education department.
Intro to Kinesiology and Intro to Exercise Physiology each do not have prerequisites; in fact, before taking any of the other classes one must take one of these classes. Intro to Kinesiology is a class where students learn the basics of kinesiology- physical activity, how to study movement, introduction of career fields where kinesiology is applicable and what a kinesiologist must do in their job. The Intro to Exercise Physiology class covers anatomy, general and basic nutrition and more broad topics of exercise. Since these classes are introductory and required before any other classes, they are currently the only ones available to take for the fall 2016 semester.
“We’re rolling out the program starting this semester, so what I’m doing is teaching two, prepping an additional two for the winter. And then a fifth course is being offered to get the program rolling. So we have these two courses for fall, and then we’re going to turn around and offer them again in winter, plus the two follow up classes that would normally be associated with that. And then next fall, we’re going to turn around and run those same four classes and that puts us back on track for people who want to get an associates,” said Mark Papineau, program coordinator, personal trainer and current instructor.
Exercise Tests and Measurement and Exercise Techniques each require that a student take PE 112 beforehand. PE 143 introduces fitness assessments, which is showcased through both lecture and demonstration. During this class, students learn the practicality of fitness assessments and how to assess them. PE 147 teaches proper exercise techniques to students. This is not only helpful to students who may want to go into a physical education field, but also to learn more about their bodies and workout routines. Facilities Management, on the other hand, requires students take PE 111 and teaches them how to design, market, staff, purchase equipment and many other things that are required skills to operate a physical education business.
“It gives them a foundation, in particular, if they’re going into the field of sciences or, like I did myself, in health in physical education. So for those people who want to get into teach physical education, science or health, it’s a Godsend. Then, you parlay that with the fact that all our upper level courses are transferable in Michigan and most of our four year institutions offer Physical Education so it’s very important they can get those classes done here and they don’t have to worry about it when they move to a four year,” said Sid Fox, Athletic Director of Schoolcraft College, when asked why these courses are beneficial to Schoolcraft students.
Along with the introductory classes, Motor Development does not have any prerequisites. Motor Development teaches students how motor development may increase or decrease throughout a person’s life. Unlike the introductory classes, PE 225 is not currently offered during the fall semester.
Lastly, Applied Exercise Physiology and Fitness Leadership Internship have the most prerequisites. For PE 212, one must have completed PE 112, 143 and 147. During this course, students learn how to use exercise philosophy on a personal level, how to exercise properly, guidelines for clients and business and how to set up programs. In PE 290, students are given the opportunity to have an internship in the specialized field of physical education. Not only does one have to have completed PE 212 with a 3.0, but a student wishing to participate must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and the consent of the physical education department.
“It’s nice to be able to engage in physical activity and get credit for doing so. But, you know, there’s a nice structure to be able to enroll in a class where you actually have a degreed professor who is leading you through the proper way to work out or to exercise and to really learn about your health and how to take care of it over a lifetime,” Patty Donohue Ebach, the manager of the Schoolcraft Fitness Center, points out a great advantage of taking classes in the physical education field at Schoolcraft.
Overall, the opportunities that Schoolcraft is giving to students through the expansion of the Physical Education Fitness Leadership program is a additional bonus, and proves, once again, why community colleges can be just as valuable to help jump start students in careers.
