As seen in other life altering events like the COVID-19 pandemic, the most common response is to turn the page, adjust to the new norm and continue living to the best capacity possible. Schoolcraft College’s Pageturners book club has adopted the same approach in forging a fresh start to continue achieving their goals of networking with other bookworms and enjoying unexplored literary territory. Their spirit has allowed them to persevere and host the upcoming discussion March 31 for the book “The Notorious RBG” by Irin Carmon and Shana Khizhnik from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Blackboard Collaborate.
“Each fall and winter semester, we select 3 books to read and discuss from various genres and authors. All selections are available for purchase at the bookstore,” states co-coordinator and English professor, Denise Schell. “Pageturners is open to students, staff and faculty. We strive to connect like-minded individuals through the love of reading and from the safety of home.”
“The Notorious RBG” is a literary masterpiece that tells the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life. For those who don’t know her, Ginsburg was a monumental women’s rights model. She started college to become a lawyer in the 1950s and later became a supreme court justice in 1980 per President Carter’s request, but only after overcoming mass, gender-based adversity to change the bias held for women in the workforce until her death last year on Sept. 18.
“We also host an annual Arts and Writing Awards competition that features a $250 cash prize for students who submit work, whether written or in art form, based upon one of the semester’s selected books,” Schell explained. “This often inspires and encourages students to become more involved in the club and their reading while earning a fun prize.”
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to network with like-minded Ocelots. Start turning those pages and mark your calendars for March 31.
