A Netflix original series “Haunted Hotel,” has just released in perfect timing for the spooky Halloween season.
Between the ghost, fun spooks, mysteries, and of course daily life lessons for both the living and the dead, this show is hilarious and highly enjoyable.
The first episode kicks off with introducing our main characters: a single mom, Katherine, and her two children, Ben and Esther, who live and work in their newly inherited Haunted hotel called The Undervale. Aside from the never- ending barrage of ghosts who can’t seem to let go of their past and their overbearing nature, there are two additional “perks” that comes with this hotel for the family.
First, there’s Nathan, Katherine’s brother, who she inherited the hotel from and he is still there…just as a truly optimistic ghost dead set on making the hotel a success even after his passing. Contrary to his sister’s way of thinking he believes with his help, optimism, and desire to be useful even as a ghost, they can make the hotel work as a family.
Then there’s Abbadon, a quirky, mischievous, out-of-touch demon trapped in the body of a boy from the 1700s. Together they make Katherine’s already stressful new life more chaotic and overwhelming.
The main premise behind this series is Ben and Ester being influenced by the various different ghosts and their unfinished business, which keeps them trapped in this hotel for many of them, never being able to move on. At least that’s how it seems initially.
But as the season progressed it became clear that they were in fact false protagonists. The true protagonist and heart of this story or at least from my perspective is Abaddon, the out-of-touch, quirky demon who on the outside could care less about anything aside from chaos and world domination but deep down he just wants friends and a place to belong.
By the end of this first season you truly get to see his character growth, exploration of self and how he discovered what it was he truly wanted in life. Watching his journey and the sacrifices he’s willing to make to achieve that truly makes this show worthwhile to the very end.
Starting from the first episode to the last if you’ve ever watched “The Office,” viewers can expect that same dry humor, sarcasm, and cringe. In fact, Abaddon and Esther, both share those unique qualities that Michael and Dwight display in “The Office”: pure randomness, chaos, and inability to read a room.
From typical horror tropes to laugh-out-loud “Are you serious?” moments, “Haunted Hotel” perfectly balances the spooky and mysterious with silly life lessons that are just plain fun to watch.
This show is definitely recommended as a fun, quick watch for yourself or with a group of friends.
