Bad Blood

Taylor Swift and Kanye West’s feud continues

By Maddie Darling, Editorial Intern
Since 2009, it has been no secret to the fans of both Taylor Swift and Kanye West that the two parties significantly struggle at getting along. At the VMAs that year, West was presenting Swift’s award when things took a turn. In the middle of her acceptance, West cut off Swift and proclaimed her as undeserving to the award. Swift and the entire audience were horrified by what had happened. Ever since that moment, West has failed to respect the young pop icon, and many other awkward encounters have taken place. Now 7 years later, the fiery duo still fail at letting bygones be bygones.

In early February of 2016, West announced that he would be dropping his new album “The Life of Pablo”. In a portion of lyrics in the new song “Famous” featured on the album, West mentions that he believes that he and Swift will be having sex. The lyrics continue to defend his belief by claiming that West is the reason for Swift’s fame. West rarely has a filter, however this time may have crossed the line for Swift, who later said that she never gave permission to use those lyrics. Later that month at the Grammys, Swift won album of the year. She proudly went on stage and was prepared to use that moment in the spotlight for her advantage.
“As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame,” Swift said, firing her best defenses while shocking all those watching.
When West was confronted with Swift’s statement, he did not expect anything less of her. West rationalized that there are bigger things that people need to be worried about, and their fans will support them regardless, even with the recent tension.
Who will be the bigger person? Maybe West, father of two young children, will decide that it is time to step up. Even successful, 26-year-old Swift could call it quits–or maybe the pettiness will continue on for another 7 years before both sides have had their fair share.
