Ocelots fall to John Wood in national quarterfinal
By Nick Misiak
The 19 game win streak that the Schoolcraft Mens Basketball team was riding came to a sudden halt on Thursday, March 19 as they lost 89-66 in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament to John Wood (IL) Community College.
Four John Wood starters scored fifteen or more points. Sophomore guard Paxton Harmon led all scorers in the game with 24 points, sophomore guard Brody Gronewold scored 16 points, and sophomore point guards Peter Odia and Jordan Johnson both had 15 points.
Freshman guard Ja’Christian Biles scored 16 points to lead all Ocelot scorers; while freshman guard Ronald Booth accumulated 12 points and sophomore forward Javan Thomas tallied 11 points.
The first half was relatively even, with both teams trading baskets throughout. The largest lead was only six points in favor of the Blazers, and the half ended with Schoolcraft trailing 39-36.
John Wood exploded out of the gate in the second half, scoring the first nine points of the half. Thomas answered with four points for the Ocelots, but the Blazers would make five three-pointers in a row in a 17-3 run that gave John Wood a 22 point advantage with 13 minutes left to play. Their lead would eventually balloon to 30 with 4:10 remaining in the game, and despite their best efforts, the top ranked Ocelots could not overcome the massive deficit.
Schoolcraft will now play for fifth place, which they will win if they are victorious in their next two games. Their next game is on Friday, March 20 at 4 p.m. against Kishwaukee (IL) Community College.
