Schoolcraft College will be hosting a jazz concert featuring Roger Ingram, a world renowned trumpet player on Monday, April 20. Ingram started his career when he was16 and has since gone on to perform with many large acts including the Woody Herman Orchestra and Tom Jones. Before the concert Ingram will be hosting a workshop to talk about his personal career and his instrument of choice. The workshop is free to the public and runs from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the DiPonio Room in the VisTaTech Center.

“I want to attend this concert because I have an interest in jazz music but I do not know too much about it. This concert will help me explore the jazz music genre,” said Schoolcraft student Tommy Fargo. The concert will be an educational show for all.

Later in the evening, The Up Jumped Spring Concert will start at 7:30 p.m. in the same location. General admission is $15, seniors and students are $10 and children under the age of 12 are $5. Tickets can be purchased both at the door and at the Schoolcraft College Bookstore.

Dr. Riccardo Selva has been instrumental in coordinating the guest artists to perform for the Jazz concert. He is the director of the Schoolcraft College Jazz program and has been with Schoolcraft since 2009. Selva has high hopes for the concert.

“I hope to provide an enriching cultural offering to the college and surrounding community by programming a world-class creative, educational, and entertaining concert,” said Selva. “The DiPonio Room can seat 470 guests and I would like to sell out every seat.”

Selva also noted that a good friend of his, Midge Ellis, recently passed away in January. He said that Ellis was the driving force behind the Michigan Jazz Festival, which is held every year in July.

“This year for the Michigan Jazz Festival we are going to do something very special to commemorate Midge Ellis,” said Selva. The Michigan Jazz Festival will be held on July 19, 2015.

Along with Ingram, the Schoolcraft College Jazz Studies Program, the Jazz Ensemble, the Jazz Improvisation Combo and the Synthesizer Ensemble will perform at the concert on April 20.
The Jazz program and Selva encourage guests to come to the jazz festival and to attend the show; this will surely be a concert not to miss.
