How you can help a student this Thanksgiving
by Cody Yarbrough, Staff writer
Thanksgiving is a time of year for us to be thankful for all we have in our lives, but through an opportunity that Schoolcraft is offering, it can also be a time of giving as well.
For the past five years, Schoolcraft has been helping students in need by giving out Thanksgiving baskets full of food so that they can celebrate without worrying about cost.
“We felt that we wanted to give a little bit more during the holidays,” said Todd Stowell, Director of Student Activities. “We noticed that there were some of these giveaways at local churches and other civic groups and we thought that this could be something for our students too.”
The baskets feed about four to five people and come uncooked so that recipients can have a fresh meal on Thanksgiving Day. Students and faculty play the biggest role the giveaway by nominating students. All they have to do is fill out a form that can found in the Student Activities Office.
“If somebody is nominating them, we’re assuming that person knows that individual and that there is a need there,” Stowell added. “So, we’re not looking into anybody’s financials or need.”
Anyone who wants to contribute but doesn’t know anyone in need can still give back by volunteering to help put together and distribute the baskets. Just go to the Student Activities Office and they will tell you how you can help.
Despite this giveaway being nothing but a great opportunity for those in need, there haven’t been many nominations turned in, and the time to do so is coming fast. Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. is the deadline to nominate someone.
If anyone sees that there is a need from a student on campus let the Student Activities Office know. Just fill out the form and bring it in to the office. It only takes a few sentences to let the SAO know what the need is. There is still a little more time to help someone at no cost to you, all it takes is a minute to fill out the form and make someone’s Thanksgiving.
