Gloves may not be a second thought during the winter months, but to those in need, a pair of gloves can make all the difference.
During this winter season, people have the opportunity to spread warmth and joy by donating a pair of gloves to those in need. Gloves could make it possible for a child to attend school or play outside with friends and an adult’s ability to ward off frost-bite on the way to work. It is a small act of kindness that makes a huge difference.
Mittens for Detroit is a nonprofit organization that collects unused gloves for children and adults in need. Businesses, schools and other groups all over Metro Detroit sponsor collection boxes for patrons and customers to drop off unused gloves.
After collection, the boxes are sent back to Mittens for Detroit for distribution. The gloves are sorted and packed by hundreds of volunteers to get mittens onto cold hands in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park and Dearborn. The donated gloves reach people in need through distribution from nearly 100 agencies including schools, shelters, veterans’ organizations, health facilities, food pantries and senior centers.
Since the start of Mittens for Detroit in 2010, nearly one quarter million gloves have been collected and distributed to Metro Detroit.
Anyone interested in donating gloves can view the numerous collection locations on the Mittens for Detroit website, mittensfordetroit.networkforgood. com/projects/53173-warminghearts-2-hands-at-a-time-withmittens-for-detroit.
This winter, you can make all the difference in someone’s life by warming not only their hands with mittens but your own heart with the act of giving back.
