There is no denying times are tough right now, and many people feel as though they can’t do anything but watch everything go down from behind their windows. Regardless of what you choose to entertain yourself with this quarantine season, the Freep Film Festival has the goods for you!
The virtual version of Freep Film Festival is being held April 22 to 26. The full schedule of online screenings is available at freepfilmfestival.com.
Many of the films in question revolve around Detroiters’ admirable actions and stories, while others involve themselves with historical figures, artforms or cultural significance.
Some of the films on the lineup are “St. Louis Superman,” about a young father and freepFilmFestivalrapper turned activist and state representative, “Pie in the Puss,” where Michigan native Stacey Davis explores the evolution of “pie-ing” throughout cinema history, and “Making a Mark,” which profiles some of Detroit’s top working artists in the 2019 class of Kresge Arts in Detroit fellows.
Shows start April 22 and run through April 26. In collaboration with Kresge Arts in Detroit and Cinema Detroit, the Freep Film Festival is offering free popcorn and sealed drinks for pickup to go alongside the festival’s online screenings.
Those who wish to order their free popcorn and drinks for pickup at Cinema Detroit can fill out the order form located at the bottom of their page. And don’t worry – in the form it is specified that the theater’s co-founders will be the only people in the building, and that they will be wearing masks, gloves, the whole 9 yards, to keep things safe.
There’s even a rather detailed food-pickup procedure that follows social distancing guidelines, though it’s rather best to fill out the form and read it for yourself.
What better time to become cultured through locally sourced documentaries that when you should be studying for finals. Take a break, relax and enjoy some of these amazing films all in the comfort of your home.
