No college comes close to the 10,092 online credit hours that Schoolcraft College produced last year. These numbers speak volumes of SC’s performance among 2-year colleges, the quality of its curriculum and instruction. Even more, they are an important indicator of the college’s future success.
On top of the growth in this area, which amounts to 27 percent of all credits produced at the college, the quality and rigor of SC’s courses are so good that other colleges have contacted SC to understand how the college builds its online courses, according to Hawkins.
The reason why other colleges look at Schoolcraft to see how it’s done is because of SC’s emphasis on high-value courses. This gives those students who take these courses an edge over the competition.

“A [high value] course gives students the best possible return on the investment they put into their classes; when a student gives it their all, they’re equipped not just for the field they expect to get a job in, but also are educated well enough to be able to adjust to another field,” said Schoolcraft College President, Dr. Conway Jeffress. “That value comes from a curriculum that provides courses that are technically accurate and reflects the field they want to major in.”
This, in turn, creates courses that people find desirable for their occupation. They are courses that are ‘ready-to-teach,’ and equip students specifically to move onto the next stage, whether that be moving onto the next semester, a new college or to the job market after graduation.
The support services that are provided and the sheer variety of courses – some of which don’t use textbooks but Open Educational Resources instead: freely accessible, openly licensed texts, media and other digital items that are useful for learning.
“We believe we will see this delivery format continue to experience enrollment growth, thus helping students achieve their educational goals,” stated Hawkins.
Looking toward the future, more students are gravitating toward online courses and the Distance Learning platform created here at the college; a platform that allows students from all over the world to both take courses they need or are interested in.
