Ocelots Advance!

The #15 ranked Ocelots women’s basketball team advanced to the semi-final round of the Great Lakes District A tournament

 The #15 ranked Schoolcraft Ocelots women’s basketball team advanced to the semi-final round of the Great Lakes District A tournament. In the first round, the Ocelots knocked off Oakland Community College (19-9, 8-6) on Tuesday (March 7) by a score of 63-48.

Schoolcraft controled the game from the opening tip. Eve Parrish netted the opening basket of the game to get the Ocelots out to a 2-0 lead. Schoolcraft led 6-0 before the Raiders would get their first basket 2 minutes and 49 seconds into the game. Oakland would get a 3-pointer to fall at the end of the first quarter which would make the Ocelots lead only 4 (19-15).

Schoolcraft would push the lead in the second quarter, as Oakland would never trail by less than those 4 points throughout the second quarter. The lead for Schoolcraft pushed to as much as 18 points in the second quarter and would lead 36-20 going into the break. Defense was key for the Ocelots, in the second quarter, as they forced 7 Raiders turnovers in the quarter. OCC only had 1 field goal in the entire second quater with, 3 out of their 5 points coming from the free throw line. Schoolcraft wound up outscoring the Raiders, 17-5 in the second quarter.

Oakland would make things a little interesting in the second half, getting as close as 6 points after an offensive stall from Schoolcraft. The Ocelots were able to push the lead back out to 12 as they closed out the third quarter on a 6-0 run. The fourth quarter saw the Ocelots locking down on the defensive end, allowing only 11 points, as they held off the Raiders from trying to comeback. Schoolcraft would again, outscore OCC in a quarter (14-11).

Eve Parrish was the leader for the Ocelots, putting up 19 points on 9-17 shooting. Parrish, was also big on the glass, registering 6 total rebounds, 5 of which came on the offensive end.  Hunter Conway was the only other Ocelots in double figures. Conway was 7-12 from the field to total 17 points for the contest. Conway was a true point guard all night, registering 4 assists to go along with 3 rebounds. Conway also led the team in steals with 5. Ruby Garnerwas the leader on the glass, tallying 8 rebounds, 6 defensive and 2 offensive.

Schoolcraft is back in action on Thursday (March 9) when they face off against #20 Lakeland Community College (21-3)  in the semi-final round of the NJCAA Great Lakes District A tournament. That game will tip-off at 1:30PM at Mott Community College located in Flint,MI. Schoolcraft is 2 wins away from punching their ticket to the national tournament March 21-25 hosted by St. Clair County Community College.
