On March 16 the Michigan Press Association announced the winners of the 2022 College Better Newspaper Contest. The Connection received 13 awards, up six from the previous academic year.

Placement totals include: One first place, four second place, five third place and three for Honorable Mention.

Members of the Colorado Press Association reviewed 579 entries submitted by 16 Michigan college newspapers this year. The Connection competed in the Division 3 category.

“It is more important than ever to recognize and encourage good, impactful journalism. That is what our college newspapers are doing, and with support and recognition from contests and professionals in the field, that will continue. Our experienced faculty and advisors will see to it as well,” said Joanne Williams, associate professor of journalism and mass communication at Olivet College and MCPA president.

Here is a look at the Connections totals for the last 10 years of competing in the Michigan Press Association College Better Newspaper Contest: 2012-2022 (10 years) total = 108 (MPA)

“Returning from COVID was a struggle for us all, but I’m proud of our team and what we were able to accomplish. It was an honor to bring back the printed newspaper and watch our skills grow. Everyone was very deserving of the awards that were won and I’m eager to see what next for the Connection in the year to come,” said Ben Bolstrum 2021-22 Editor-in-Chief and current Managing Editor of the Connection.
