The Schoolcraft Ocelots women’s basketball team played host to the Pioneers from Delta College. Schoolcraft entered the contest looking to bounce back from a loss over the holiday break.
The Ocelots came out of the gates in this game looking to get a bad taste out of their mouths from a loss against Parkland over the break. This was shown by an 8-0 run to open the contest. Delta would bounce back and make a run of their own, pushing the Schoolcraft lead to 1, before the Ocelots would close out the first quarter on a mini run to lead 18-14 after 10 minutes. The Ocelots offense would only improve going into the second frame. The defense would keep the Pioneers off the board for the first three and a half minutes while extending their lead to 24-12. The Ocelots would outscore the Pioneers by 11 in the 2nd quarter to lead 41-24 going into the half. Taylor Williams led the charge on the offensive end for the Ocelots in the first half by putting up 14 points and 1 assist. Sharon Smith would also contribute 7 points and 4 assists.
Coming out of the break, Schoolcraft would push further on the gas. The Ocelots defense would have one of their best quarters of the season holding Delta to 9 points while the offense would have their best quarter of the season by putting up 37 points in the 10 minutes of play. Nevaeh Cable would score 11 points, quarter best, followed by Kyra Lawrence (9), Demi Rodriguez (8), Sharon Smith (4), Halle Rogers (4) and Sydney McCaig (1). The defense would have 8 steals, Lawrence (1), Cable (1), Smith (2), Rodriguez (1), Williams (2) and McCaig (1). Lawrence and Cable out also each add 1 block. Schoolcraft would go 80% (4/5) from 3 lead by Rodriguez going 2/2. Schoolcraft would extend their lead by 1 total point in the 4th quarter outscoring the Pioneers 19-18. Lawrence would lead the quarter with 7 points.
Schoolcraft would have 6 players in double figures highlighted by all 5 starters with Halle Rogers joining in off of the bench. Taylor Williams led the team with 18 points while Lawrence had 16, Cable with 13, Smith had 11, and Rodriguez and Rogers both tied with 10 points. Williams would also fall 1 rebound short of a double double. Smith would quarterback the offense with 7 assists in 29 minutes.
Schoolcraft returns to the court on Saturday, January 13, playing Macomb to open up MCCAA play. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00PM.
