There is just one week left to submit proposals for 2023-24 STEAMz Schoolcraft Conference. Proposals are due by Friday, Feb. 16.
You may wonder what STEAMz is and how to get involved. STEAM is the abbreviation of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The z stands for Generation Z, though they have decided to focus more on the younger side of GenZ. This does not mean older students are excluded, on the contrary. Students of all ages are encouraged to participate.
STEAMz is a student-led conference with an opportunity for student speakers to express what they have learned while being a student.
There are three types of presentations to select from (individual, duo/group (up to four people) and art (max of 2 pieces per submission, three total per artist ). Individual Presentations and Duo/Group presentations are 10-13 minute in length with visual aids/video.
Student presenters can choose an art form to show how they will make an impact. If you and a classmate have a great business idea you can present it as a duo. Individual speakers will express their passion for the future impact they hope to give to the community.
“Students will have guidance and help throughout [the planning and presenting process]” said STEAMz lead, Professor Christina Stensell-Weaver. Students are automatically assigned a mentor to guide them, helping presenters to become confident and prepared for the conference.
Student and fellow, Noah Spicer, majoring in pre-law, urges presenters to “Get in [your proposal] early and talk to your mentor ASAP. Talk to your mentor a couple times a week, less stress. Don’t wait till the last minute.” With the deadline right around the corner, Feb. 16th, don’t wait to put in your proposal to speak on your passions and what you have learned while attending Schoolcraft.
There is no doubt that Schoolcraft offers an array of resources and STEAMz is one of those resources. With scholarship prizes, mentorship with professors and a learning experience unparalleled, this opportunity should not be passed up. To submit a proposal, you can click on the link down below or go to the Schoolcraft webpage and search STEAMz.
Student fellows helping organize are engineering major Jonah Efrusy, pre-law major Noah Spicer and Chase-Lyn Watson-Labell who is majoring in science with a special interest in marine biology.
