A tradition that started at the Art Institute by art professors Stefanie and Cynthia Sarris, now gracing the Schoolcraft Forum building for the past two years. Students such as Caitlyn Cherry, featuring their art on the backs of skateboards. Cherry has beautiful flowers flowing the theme of the stained glass window seen behind the flowers. Her bouquet of flowers has some lively flowers and some that are dying.
“I wanted to incorporate the concept of life and death,” said Cherry about why she chose her theme.
Skateboards were not all that was featured in the art show, there were also canvas paintings displayed.
Lacy Galligan’s paintings featured monochromatic paintings of birds that can be found in Michigan, though they are not native to our beautiful state. “I find that I am inspired by nature for most of my art”
Some students were inspired to take different avenues with their skateboards.
Student Elise Binkowski felt that she did not want to have any words but wanted to showcase her current inspiration of body horror. When the skateboard is viewed at first one may not realize what she is trying to express, when asked what was the inspiration for her skateboard she stated, “ It is inspired by decomposition.”
Though students were not the only ones who had art featured in this particular show. Connection adviser, Rena Laverty was asked by the art professors to particpate. Her Animaniacs skateboard reminds us that we don’t always know who has a secret talent hidden away.
All art from the show is still available to view in the forum building.
