Harry Potter fans rejoice, “Hogwarts Legacy” is finally here!
This captivating game was initially released on February 10, 2023 on the platforms of Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC. The game transfigures players straight into the adored elements of the wizarding world and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, through breathtaking graphics and marvelous storylines.
The game opens with players receiving their Hogwarts acceptance letter from new Deputy Headmistress Weasley, before completely customizing their characters. Preset options are available along with detailed customization such as voice, clothing, skin color, hair style and color, complexion, scars and more. Players can further select their dormitory preference of witch or wizard, as well as select their difficulty level; story, easy, normal and hard.
Players are then shown an action-fueled cut-scene containing vital plot information, before starting the tutorial in a small cave with Professor Fig. This beginning quest offers an opportunity to both to learn and get comfortable with the controls, ranging from basic movements to casting spells. Upon completion, players are sent to Hogwarts through an impeccable and nostalgic cut-scene.
Witches and wizards then participate in the interactive sorting ceremony, where they answer a few questions from the sorting hat to be selected into one of the four Hogwarts houses; Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. If unhappy with their given house, players will have the option to select the house of their choosing. Another cut-scene occurs, before players wake up in their new house common room and are now able to explore. These dormitories are parallel to the ones in the films, although players should take note; access to the other house dormitories is denied.
Gamers are then allowed to freely roam Hogwarts and the wizarding world to engage with other characters, complete the main story and partake in a large supply of side quests. Be prepared to encounter some magical beasts and keep your wands ready; this game is full of surprises!
The main controls are easy to learn and use, as well as the flight controls. Both are remarkably smooth, with the game offering many additional opportunities for players to polish these skills. Similarly, the fast travel option is quick and easy, and navigation worldwide is expertly accomplished.
On the downside, the Hogwarts map portion is slightly complex and may be difficult for some players to navigate. It is recommended to practice working with it for a while to get comfortable with it, as players may be referencing it frequently throughout gameplay.
The cinematography is impressive, as it reveals stunning aerial views of the wizarding world when players take flight. The graphics during the combat segments are equally impressive, showing unique details for each spell cast. Another grand highlight is the intricate detail that went into designing and creating Hogwarts, as fans will love exploring their favorite spots from the films.
Witches and wizards in the game will enjoy watching the bewitching changing of the seasons in Hogsmeade and on Hogwarts castle grounds. Gamers will also enjoy spotting some famous wizarding places like Ollivander’s, Zonko’s and The Three Broomsticks.
