The Schoolcraft cross country team wrapped up their season on Nov. 11 at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Cross Country national championships in Huntsville, Alabama.
Freshmen Noah Walters and Ryan Morris competed individually and represented Schoolcraft.
Walters completed the race with his best time of 26:45 in the 8K (4.97 miles) and placed 49th overall. Morris also had a best time in the 8K, of 28:31 and he placed 137th overall. Both teammates had put countless hours of practicing and placing in various tournaments during the season to qualify them for the national stage.
Coach Tobin Jones made it evident that his relationship with the “dynamic duo” is nothing but great. “I give them a lot of credit for staying committed WITHOUT a team around them,” said Jones.
It just makes sense with less supporters around you it’s easier to pull away, but not for these two. Walters and Morris stuck together and made for an unforgettable season for the Ocelots first year back of the program. Walters’ mentioned the relationship of Morris and himself as a brotherhood. In addition, he also mentioned how they used to compete against each other. During Walters’ time in high school he ran against Morris in two races.
The runners participated in four other tournaments this season and showed growth with each race.
While the roster this year was smaller than expected, Coach Jones is looking for the team to grow. Jones is looking for any and all runners who want to continue to compete after their high school years.
Aside from looking for new recruits, the men and their coach are in the process of starting a beneficial club for runners.
“Myself and my “dynamic duo” are forming a Schoolcraft College Indoor Track/Road racing club team,” said Jones. It’s the perfect opportunity to perfect your skills before going out and competing as a team.
Any students interested in joining the cross country team should contact the Athletics Office.
