Coming off a three game winning streak, the Women’s Volleyball team started conference play on the right foot, dominating their match against Hawks of Henry Ford College.
The Ocelots secured a decisive 3-0 victory, with set scores of 25-9, 25-17, and 25-19. The match was a clear sign that the team is focused and determined, showing their readiness for the upcoming conference schedule.
The first set was fast and direct, with the Ocelots showing no mercy. The team took advantage of a disorganized Hawks team and secured a 16 point lead. The Hawks showed more presence in the second set, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Ocelots’ consistent play. The final set was the most competitive, with powerful attacks and scrappy defenses from both sides. However, the Ocelots proved they were the better team, executing their coach’s strategies flawlessly to close out the match.
The team’s success was powered by standout performances by outside hitter Hayden Brose, who had a total of 18 kills and 9 digs. Her performance highlighted her versatility, showing she could not only score but also contribute significantly on defense.
“Everyone’s goal is to come off strong for their first game of the season and I’m thankful that that’s how our team performed. I couldn’t have been as successful as I was without all of the others performing the way they did. We all have high hopes for this season and are looking forward to many more victories.” said Brose.
Another key player was setter Isabelle Phillips, who orchestrated the offense with a total of 28 assists. Her precision in setting up her teammates was a major factor in the team’s ability to score so consistently. Phillips emphasized the importance of teamwork and a positive mindset.
“I always try to have a good connection with my hitters. If something goes wrong I always ask them what I could change about my set that will help them. The key to maintaining synergy with my hitters is always staying positive. Even if we lose a point we don’t let it get in our heads and just move on from it,” said Phillips.
The Ocelots are now 5-2 on the season, with great momentum heading into their next matchup. Their 5-2 start with a 1-0 conference record sees them atop of the MCCAA Eastern Conference standings based on winning percentage, tied with St. Clair and Oakland.
Schoolcraft will play at home Monday, Sept. 22, for a 7 p.m. game against Jackson College.
