The Ocelots faced one of the most challenging weeks of the season, with three games in five nights on the road that will directly influence the team’s trajectory in the final stretch of the regular season. Amidst long travel, physical fatigue, and adverse weather conditions, the team showed composure pulling way with two wins and one loss.
First up for the Ocelots was Ancilla College in Indiana on Wed. Oct. 15. The team claimed a 5-1 victory in a match marked by physical exertion and intensity. Despite the score, the game was intense and demanded a lot of determination from the players. The constant pressure imposed by the Ocelots prevented their opponents from keeping up, resulting in several stoppages due to cramps in the Chargers players and a clear dominance by the Ocelots. Key contributors for the Ocelots were Adechina Moussedikou with two goals and Amar Selmic (1 goal, 2 assists).
The team then traveled west five hours to Chicago on Friday, Oct. 17, where they faced Morton College in a tough and evenly matched match. Morton struck early in the 7th minute with a goal by Morton’s Ricardo Cruz, making it 1-0. Morton would score two more times in the second half before the Ocelots would find the net. In the 81st minute, Jevaughn Harris would put the Ocelots on the board, 3-1.
The game ended 3-1 loss for the Ocelots, where the team’s ability to react and adapt against a physical and well-organized opponent was tested. Despite the loss, the collective performance taught the team important lessons.Â
After a day of rest to fine-tune their performance, the Ocelots faced a strong Prairie State team on Oct. 19 which was played under unfavorable weather conditions. The rain, cold and strong winds almost cancelled the match, especially because they played in a natural grass field, and it was precisely these conditions that made it even more challenging. However, the team demonstrated maturity, tactical control, determination, and precise finishing to secure the result and end the week on a positive note with a 3-0 shutout.
Game leaders were Giovanni Ivezaj with two goals, Jevaughn Harris (2 assists) and goaltender Benjamin Modronja who had 9 saves for the win.
The three-game road series served to reinforce the Ocelots’ collective identity and mental strength. The team demonstrated its ability to adapt to different scenarios and remain competitive, demonstrating its readiness for the season’s upcoming challenges.
The focus now turns to the last game of the regular season against St. Clair County Community College at home on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. a decisive game that will determine the team’s fate.
To secure a spot at nationals, the Ocelots need to win the Region XII Championship and after then the District final, a difficult task, but entirely achievable given the team’s growth and confidence.
The winning mentality, built throughout the season will be the main asset in this final stretch that could lead the team back to the national stage.
