If you’ve ever been to a campus event, you’ve probably been greeted by a smiling face wearing a blue and gold polo eager to assist you with your questions. These group of individuals make up the Student Ambassador program which is housed through the Admissions Department at Schoolcraft.
Launched in 2003, the Schoolcraft Student Ambassadors program offers opportunities for students to give campus tours to prospective students and assist with both on-and-off campus events representing the college.
Students interested in becoming a Student Ambassador can apply in a few easy steps.
The first step is to apply through Scholarship Universe, the scholarship-matching system that Schoolcraft uses. Once selected for the program, students who become an ambassador must complete 100 hours of service for the year. Training for the Ambassadors program counts for 30 of these hours, but students can choose the hours that fit best with their schedules. Current Ambassador, TerrOnna Moore said that it feels natural and easy to get all her required hours for the program, even saying that it is fun.
“Our program directors are incredibly understanding, so I scheduled events around my school commitments and chose ones that offered great networking opportunities and seemed genuinely enjoyable,” said said Moore.
The Ambassadors use an app called When-to-Work to easily schedule the hours that fit best for them. There are also a lot of unique opportunities students can be exposed to that in passing might not have even noticed were happening on campus.
While our Student Ambassadors get to experience numerous events on campus, they also get special opportunities set up by the program directors, Tracey Thomas. Former Student Ambassador William Ugorji, comments that these leadership and professional development workshops set up by Thomas, exposed him to valuable networking and career resources that’ll assist him in his college career and beyond, as well as opportunities for mentorship.
The Student Ambassador program offers a wonderful experience with a diverse group of student leaders.
When asked what his favorite part of being an Ambassador, another former Leo Bebba responded, “Honestly, it’s the energy. I love being around people, welcoming new students, representing Schoolcraft at events, and knowing I’m playing a part in shaping someone’s first impression of the college. Plus, it’s just fun. Every day is different.”
Part of what Thomas did for the program was make it available to everyone, not just first year students like it was when they first took over the program in 2021. It opened up the opportunity to students who wanted to become an Ambassador, but might not have known about it in their first year. This also allows the college to have different perspectives from all around campus, instead of focusing on incoming students to Schoolcraft or have always been in the program. Thomas cares a lot for the Ambassadors program. It shows through the opportunities they are able to help the Ambassadors come into contact with and the care they show each individual student.
When asking Thomas what her favorite part of the program was, she responded with, “It would be the relationships that you build and watching the growth of the individuals.”
Any student interested in getting more involved on campus and forging new friendships, the Ambassadors program would be a great place to start.
