Anyone looking to maximize their cultural exposure during their time here at Schoolcraft will be excited to learn about this upcoming event. The Asian Student Association presents Navratri Garba this Friday, Oct. 1, from 7 p.m. to midnight inside the VisTaTech Center.

Navratri, a Hindi word meaning “nine nights,” is a Hindu festival celebrated throughout Indian culture. The bi-annual festival is held over 10 days and nine nights, falling this year from Thursday, Oct. 7, to Friday, Oct. 15. Schoolcraft’s very own Navratri Garba is a wonderful opportunity to learn about and appreciate Indian culture during this special time.

“The pandemic has been a very trying, challenging, and stressful time for many of us. Schoolcraft’s Asian Student Association is hoping to put a smile on guests’ faces Friday,” explains organizer and Asian Student Association club advisor, Anna Maheshwari. “We will celebrate Navratri with Indian food and dance while adhering to safety and social distancing protocols.”

Attendees can expect an authentic Indian dinner provided by Suvai catering, and can look forward to shopping for Indian clothes and jewelry from local vendors. Local musician Kuldip Bhatt will be performing live music, so attendees can also look forward to participating in Garba-style songs and dancing.

Tickets for this event can be purchased in advance from the Student Activities Center in Lower Waterman, VisTaTech Center, or by calling (734)-462-442. Patrons can also pre-purchase tickets from Anna Maheshwari at (248)-345-5313 or Rachna Chandra at (734)-620-4933.

Sales in advance are $20, or $25 at the door. All funds raised will support the Schoolcraft Food Pantry, so don’t miss this chance to help out while having fun!
