Matthew Kern, Managing Editor
My name is Matthew Kern, I am a second-year student here at Schoolcraft, and I am the managing editor at the Connection. I am currently working on a transfer degree, to pursue a dual-major in neuroscience and film. People often ask if those disciplines have any relation to one-another, and I tell them that they do not. I simply wish to have a balanced study of both the arts and sciences while I am attending school.
I enjoy studying film because it engages the senses on a number of levels. A good film will appropriately use visual imagery, as well as audio engineering, and often a structured plot to evoke emotion in the viewer. To study film, for me, represents a rounding of artistic discipline. One has to know music in order to pick a soundtrack for a project, or one could learn from a painter about setting up the perspective of a shot. I wish to study film, and hopefully someday direct a project, in order to learn how to blend different styles of art. At the same time, I wish to study neuroscience. The human mind fascinates me. I believe that the brain is the most complex machinery on the planet, and I wish very much to be a part of discovering its potential. I think neuroscience, to me, represents a rounding of scientific discipline as well. My path from here on out will involve physics, chemistry, biology and psychology classes. To understand the complex machinery of the human mind, I will need exposure to a variety of scientific perspectives, which is very exciting to me.
Outside of school, I often enjoy seeing live music. Before the pandemic, I was seeing a show nearly every week and have tried to squeeze in as many as I can after the venues opened up again. Most of what I listen to is punk and alternative music, so many of the concerts I see are punk bands, but I also love a good metal show and have on occasion gone out to see a rapper. At the end of the day, I simply love art and music, so I am not picky about the artists I see.
It’s just nice to get out and have fun!
