For some, the kitchen is merely a place of recipes and routines, but for April’s Student Employee of the Month, Ethan Ducharme, it is a classroom for leadership and a stage for personal impact.
As a dedicated member of the culinary team, Ducharme has spent his time at Schoolcraft College refining not just his palate, but his ability to guide others.
A central figure in the college’s culinary operations, Ducharme’s development has been heavily influenced by the high standards of his mentors. Working under the guidance of Chef Brian Beland, he discovered that technical proficiency is only half the battle in a professional kitchen.
“The most important thing I learned working under Chef Beland would be learning how to lead and motivate a team of chefs,” said Ducharme.
This focus on human capital is a hallmark of Ducharme’s work ethic. While many students focus solely on their individual craft, he has utilized his time at Schoolcraft to prepare for the administrative and interpersonal demands of the industry. He credits the program for giving him a versatile toolkit that balances the technical skills of cooking with the essential skills of management.
“My time at Schoolcraft has given me the tools to cook and make good food, but it has also taught me how to manage people and delegate work,” explained Ducharme.
Beyond the logistical side of the kitchen, Ducharme is driven by a deep sense of purpose. He views hospitality as a medium for meaningful change, a realization that struck him after seeing the immediate effect a well-prepared meal can have on a guest’s wellbeing.
“Once I realized how a good meal can change someone’s whole day, it made me realize I would love to put my energy into something that could make such an impact on so many people’s lives,” Ducharme said.
When the kitchen timers stop and the aprons come off, Ducharme finds balance through his love for music. Although the rigorous schedule of a chef does not leave room for a formal band, he remains a dedicated musician in his private time, often blending his two passions by listening to music while he works.
Congratulations to Ethan Ducharme for being named April’s Student Employee of the Month and for demonstrating that leadership and passion are the ultimate ingredients for success.
