Fans of Zootopia (2016), rejoice! A mere decade later, a sequel to Zootopia hit theaters, titled “Zootopia 2.”
Starring the positive, always-seeking-justice bunny, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), alongside her partner-in-crime, conniving yet spontaneous fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). In times of desperation and chaos, the movie begs the question: Can police officers Judy and Nick work together and capture the bad guy of Zootopia?
Set inside the metropolitan area of Zootopia, ruled under the Lynxley family (the family is a lynx animal), Judy and Nick once again team up on a criminal case to go after the Lynxley family, who have taken control of Zootopia when it should be directed under the De’Snake family. Judy and Nick work with a new character in the film, Gary De’Snake (Ke Huy Wuan), as the reptile tries to ensure Zootopia is returned to the rightful hands of the De’Snake pedigree. While Judy meets a friendly and outgoing Pawbert Lynxley (Andy Samberg), who assures the bunny he despises his family and wants to work with Judy, Nick, and Gary, Nick does not believe it is worth the tribulations and time it will take to head into the abandoned De’Snake territory. This area proves that the De’Snake have owned the Zootopia Patent all along. While Judy believes it is unfair for the quartet to give up and not pursue justice for Gary’s ancestors, Nick decides to return to Zootopia, discouraged by the prospect that he let Gary, Pawbert, and especially Judy down. Accordingly, Nick goes back to find the trio only to be seen and arrested by some officers, who believe the duo are working for the “enemy”, the De’Snakes, instead of the original investigation of the De’Snakes on the Lynxley’s Patent of Zootopia. To the dismay of Judy and Gary, who saw Pawbert as a companion, the latter tricks the two in his plan to remove the Patent under the De’Snakes name, guaranteeing that Zootopia remains under Lynxley’s reign.
However, the corruptness does not stop there. As Judy and Gary reach the abandoned De’Snake territory, Pawbert finds the Patent, ties the duo up, uses an antivenom pen to immobilize them, and tries to find Nick before he escapes back to Zootopia. As many superheroes do, Nick sees the abandoned De’Snake city and his friends, Judy and Gary. While Pawbert tries to suppress Nick’s actions in helping the two, Pawbert, once again, tries to injure Nick with an antivenom pen. Luckily, the fox does not succumb to the pressures of Pawbert and throws the “rescuing” pen over to Judy. Just as Nick and Pawbert are about to fall off a melting and breaking icicle, Nick is saved by Judy and Gary, who are now freed from capture. Above everything, however, as Nick falls into the depths of the abandoned city, he drops the Patent; Zootopia now serves under De’Snake control.
Just as an old saying goes, “Time will tell, and justice will prevail,” the reptilian De’Snake family reigns over Zootopia, just as the Patent guarantees. What’s more, Pawbert and the rest of the Lyxley family are arrested and sent off to the Zootopian Police Department. The three, Judy, Nick, and Gary, hug, rested assured that Zootopia is in the hands of the rightful pedigree and that Judy and Nick’s police case is resolved.
While the two Zootopia police officers initially took on the case together, then went in different directions as each had differing opinions on whether they should take on the case, the bunny and the fox end up realizing they are only reputable, righteous police officers if they work together as a team: Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde for the Zootopia Police Department. Although the two had contentions, they ended up solving the case working in solidarity. In the end, justice prevailed for the De’Snake family, and the duo remain close confidants, personally and professionally.
Overall, the sequel to Zootopia (2016) is 8.5/10, as it serves a meaningful role in the first film and paints a beautiful picture of what friendship, teamwork, and pursuing the end goal signify, even when disagreements and arguments arise.
Directors Bush and Howard capture the purposeful story and emotions behind each character, allowing the audience to particularly witness the apparent partnership and camaraderie between the two protagonists, Judy and Nick.
As it is a tear-jerker, make sure to bring a tissue! Zootopia 2 (2025) is a motivating, emotional rollercoaster that no one should miss.
