The submission window has closed for one of the most anticipated academic events of the year. Students, faculty and staff have submitted their best work for the 2026 First Annual SC Mosaic Arts Awards which is now on display Feb. 16 through Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Wilson Room in the Vistatech Center.
The collection features 97 extraordinary pieces of artwork and literary contributions across three powerful categories.
With a $1,000 prize at stake for the winner of each category, the competition is expected to highlight the “vibrant talent and creative spirit” that defines Schoolcraft College. This new legacy, sponsored by the Liberal Arts and Sciences division and the Schoolcraft College Foundation, aims to celebrate artists from all backgrounds. Schoolcraft Marketing and Events Coordinator David Veselenak explains that the primary motivation for the event was the “evolution and expansion of inclusive excellence,” creating a space that “celebrates the depth, creativity and diversity of our entire campus community.”
The three award categories are:
- The Interdisciplinary Voice Award: Recognizing elite written expression and intellectual clarity.
- The Digital Narrative Award: Focused on the power of visual storytelling and technical execution.
- The Mosaic Cultural Expression Award: Honoring the most authentic celebrations of diversity and identity.
The expansion of the program has already seen massive success. Veselenak noted that “entries have quadrupled” this year, proving that the community was eager for a platform of this scale. Beyond the financial support, the college hopes the event represents a “shared cultural experience” and serves as a “bridge the gap between classroom creativity and real-world application,” explains Veselenak.
The winners will be announced during the ceremony on Thursday, February 19, from Noon to 2 p.m. in the Sutherland Room (Waterman Wing).
Attendees can expect a “spectacular strolling buffet” prepared by Schoolcraft’s award-winning Culinary Operations Team and a keynote address featuring Professor Brynne Barnes, an NAACP Award nominee, who will read from her new book, Black Boy, Rise.
As Veselenak concludes, the event ultimately represents Schoolcraft’s commitment to providing a “vital platform where creativity and critical thinking intersect.”
