Da’Lon Dennisa Schoolcraft student of three years, has a dream to become a professional welder after graduation and to eventually own a successful welding business. As a Welding Work Study student employee he gets first hand experience that will help him get a jump start in his field.
“On a regular day on the job at the MEC building, I clean the shop classes and stock metal for the class,” Dennis tells.”
While Dennis is enjoying welding and perfecting his skills as a student employee, he is also a part-time student committed to academic excellence. Dennis admits it is not always easy to keep after school and welding, but he tries to find stability between the two.
“Maintaining a job and attending classes can be a challenge. I balance work and school by creating a work schedule and pacing myself,” said Dennis.
Like most college students, he keeps a piece of advice close to heart. Knowing many college students have a job along with studying, he urges Schoolcraft students to pace themselves.
“Give yourself space. Understand your own personal strengths and abilities. Just try your best.” said Dennis.
Just as he is making strides in his academics and welding opportunities, he also credits Schoolcraft as a major stepping stone in his welding career. The welding program drew him here.. He cites the staff support has a great motivator as his time as a welder and student.
Since Dennis understands college can be a difficult process and some courses can make one get anxious, he reminds students of some pieces of advice that has helped him.
Dennis suggests not comparing yourself to other students. He also emphasized that if you ever need academic support, Schoolcraft offers plenty of services to guide you along your journey which have helped him balance welding and studying.
When Dennis isn’t perfecting his craft he enjoys his life outside of school and welding, too. He enjoys playing video games and playing with his dog, Chip.
Dennis displays the courage to take school and welding head-on and give both tasks his best.
With his future of owning his own business, Dennis’s consistent effort will definitely set him up for success in his future tenure at Schoolcraft and within the welding industry.
Dennis plans on graduating from Schoolcraft in Summer 2026, where he will apply to entry level welding positions to gain more experience.
