For many students, the transition from the classroom to the workplace can be a long commute, but for March’s Student Employee of the Month, Kaylee Costello, it’s just a short walk down the hall.
As a prominent member of the pastry team in culinary operations, Costello has turned her passion for Baking and Pastry Arts into a vital role on campus.
Currently pursuing an associate degree in Baking and Pastry Arts, Costello is set to graduate this spring. Her daily routine is a whirlwind of precision and creativity, preparing a wide array of baked goods for Main Street, Henry’s and various campus events.
“My favorite part of the job is seeing the outcome of baked goods and pastries after spending a lot of time working on them,” said Costello. That dedication to the “final product” is what defines her work ethic, as she bridges the gap between textbook theories and the fast-paced environment of professional culinary operations.

The convenience of working where she studies has been a game-changer for Costello’s academic success. She credits the flexibility of Schoolcraft’s Culinary Operations for allowing her to maintain a healthy balance between her responsibilities as a student and an employee.
“It’s really convenient to finish class and go right down the hall to work,” Costello explains.
This hands-on experience has proven invaluable, providing a space to practice and refine the techniques learned in the classroom alongside a supportive team.
“I’ve learned a lot from everyone in culinary operations. It has helped me gain hands-on experience and practice applying what I learn in class,” said Costello.
Beyond the kitchen timers and flour-dusted counters, Costello finds joy in other creative outlets. When she isn’t crafting delicate pastries, she enjoys gardening, cooking for pleasure and recharging with friends and family.
As for the future, Costello is focused on the horizon. After graduation this spring, she plans to dive deeper into the culinary industry to sharpen her expertise.
The ultimate goal? Opening a bakery of her own one day, a dream built on the foundation of hard work and community found here at Schoolcraft.
“I think it’s great to get involved on campus because you meet so many people,” Costello advises fellow students.
Congratulations to Kaylee Costello for being named March’s Student Employee of the Month and for representing the dedication and craft of the Baking and Pastry Arts program.
