Madison Ling, Campus Life Editor
So, we meet again or possibly for the first time... Either way, hello and welcome to the Connection’s domain. I’m the one and only Madison Ling, who can be contacted at [email protected]. As first of my name, I have the pleasure of being the Connection’s Campus Life Editor, writing and telling the stories about you, for you and directed to you. All our club meetings, virtual events and interesting alumni articles are from my section, written by yours truly or someone close by. We hope you enjoy all of them, but I’m sure you’re curious as to just who I am so let’s begin.
I’m nearly 21 years old and have been faithfully attending Schoolcraft College for close to 3 years and serving the newspaper for 2 years this February. As melodramatic as I can be, my major is as far as it gets from theatrics. In fact, I’m the stereotypical pre-med with a focused degree in biology, but you see, my dream extends far beyond simply helping others seeing as I’m a frequent flyer in the medical community. A birth defect by the name of ‘Spina Bifida’ that provides a lineup of professionals longer than the Dean’s list and a fateful infection coined “Necrotizing Fasciitis” to prove that neither a higher power nor the devil himself were ready for me yet will do that. It can be interpreted that I was born to go into medicine, but I would much rather say I was chosen for a mission to break the barriers imposed upon others like me. Point blank – my main philosophies are “I have Spina Bifida, but it doesn’t have me” and “Disability is not inability.”
Think on it, digest it and don’t overcomplicate it. We only get one life; this is mine and I plan on living it fully regardless of what anyone assumes my capabilities are. As my favorite song goes:
Give me your best shot, the stronger I stand
Not looking for sympathy
What doesn’t kill me makes me who I am
A soldier fights till he’s free
You ain’t ready for me
